It's almost time for the Cranberry Island Harvest Festival and Pie Bake-Off... and the much-anticipated annual Great Pumpkin Contest. But trouble starts brewing when the front-running pumpkin is sabotaged... and flickering, ghostly lights set island tongues wagging. When the corn maze goes up in smoke, things really start heating up... and it's up to innkeeper Natalie Barnes to get to the bottom of things. Is it really a ghost? Or is it someone's twisted idea of Halloween hijinks -- which may take a deadly turn?

Pumpkin Pied A Gray Whale Inn Short Story edition by Karen MacInerney Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

Usually I complain about half books, but since this is not technically in that category, I can just go with the flow of starting a simple short story to kick-start the autumn season. Pumpkin Pied is not intended to move the series forward or to fill in any story gaps. It is just a quick snippet to settle into with a cup of coffee and a throw blanket.

It is fall festival time on Cranberry Island and with no guests at the Gray Whale Inn Natalie Barnes is free to participate in the island’s activities this year. Unfortunately, there is some shenanigans going on with the giant pumpkin competition, stories of a local ghost and now someone has splashed the corn maze with blood and has left a pig’s heart in full view. Then things take an awful turn when there is a fire and the old feelings of the land being cursed arise again.

To top it off, the field where the activities are held belongs to a home that will soon be placed on the market and the community of Cranberry Island may soon lose this gem and the festival that goes with it. That is unless a way can be found around the sale of the property to an outsider.

As Natalie said, “Who knew that harvest festivals could be so full of drama”.

Pumpkin Pied A Gray Whale Inn Short Story edition by Karen MacInerney Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

A nice addition to the Gray Whale Inn series, and a good introduction to the new series by the same author. Ms. McInerney always pleases with pleasant, interesting charactors situated in a community with all the ups and downs of folks living closely on an island.

I recommend this series and look forward to the next entry

Full disclosure ...I met the author briefly at a mystery convention when she was kind enough to allow a stranger to share her table at coffee....but I had already read the first book, and I had already decided to go back for volume two.
I've been a fan of the Gray Whale Inn books for a long time so when Pumpkin Pied showed up I was very enthusiastic. MacInerney has well developed, well established characters, who remind me of the folks I knew when I lived in a small town in Maine. She doesn't disappoint in this short story. What a treat to see something new, even in short form, from her! I can heartily recommend anything she writes. Thinking of Maine in autumn makes me want to snuggle up by the fire with a cup of tea and a scone. Since I live where we rarely get cold weather, it's always nice to get away for a little while with the good folks from Maine.
The story is cute, but it's a stretch to call it a mystery. There's only one tense moment in the story, and it doesn't last long. I like the characters, and I think they could be a lot of fun in a longer story with a real mystery to investigate. I realize the characters are most likely more fully developed in the longer books in the series, but I was rather lost as to who they were and their relationships in this story. I didn't even know the main character's name until the end of the story. However, the writing is clear and easy to read, well, edited, and the pace is good. I'd like to try some of the longer books to get to know the characters.
Pumpkin Pied A Gray Whale Inn Short Story
Story set on an island off the coast of Maine where it's Halloween time and the Pumpkin Festival is about to begin.
So many mysteries surround the town.
There are many categories to judge. The corn maze one night is engulfed in flames and other Town folk think that will scare the buyers in purchasing the land.
Great story in a good setting around a good holiday with a handful of people this is part of a series but I didn't feel left out in the dark an excerpt from the next book is enclosed along with three recipes that won ribbons in the judging
Even with yesterday being New Years Day 2018, I still wanted to get in some reading, and this short mystery story/book was absolutely perfect. I had read it once before, but I didn't remember it all that well. I'm so glad I read it again. I loved the characters, I thought the plot was interesting – it thoroughly held my attention – and, even though really short, this was a thoroughly enjoyable read. I loved the setting with the fall harvest and especially the corn maze. Only problem is now I'm craving pumpkin pie in the worst of ways – not only a fun little read but also a delicious one – thoroughly enjoyable.
I would have liked to be able to try the recipes, however, we have a gluten-free household, so Nat's recipes would need a major adjustment to be appropriate for my family. I don't know if I really want to deal with that, as there are many gluten-free cookbooks out there now and I might find similar recipes. I enjoyed the short story, however, speaking of gluten-free, the author made fun of the "difficult" guest who demanded gluten-free items to eat. I think this made the author seem insensitive to people who have celiac disease and need to be on this sort of diet.
I was so excited to read "Pumpkin Pied," a Gray Whale Inn short story. I'm always ready to visit Natalie & her friends in Maine, and there is a surprise visitor to Cranberry Island in this story. Set in autumn, the story revolves around the island antics at the yearly, fall bake-off and pumpkin growing contest. There is also a plot that centers on a ghostly sighting on a piece of land that the locals don't want to sold to an outsider. The plot was interesting and related to the island, but, as always, I just love any excuse to visit these characters. The next Gray Whale Inn book can't come soon enough. Also, there is a yummy looking recipe for turtle pumpkin pie that I will definitely be trying at Thanksgiving.

Pumpkin Pied is not intended to move the series forward or to fill in any story gaps. It is just a quick snippet to settle into with a cup of coffee and a throw blanket.
